Highroller Event Begins WSOP 2010

So we have finally arrived, the WSOP in Las Vegas – no, not a circuit event – The Real Thing – is upon us! Kicking things off after the staff event is the much anticipated $50,000 High Roller Event, with every recognised pro attending to prove that to be the best you need to be the best in all games, not just Texas Holdem. Traditionally this is the event that players like Daniel Negranu, Doyle Brunson, Howard Lederer - the elite, the players that are proficient in all forms of poker, want to win. It will be very interesting to follow Daniel Negranu’s progress in this event as he has really been building up expectations in his blogs, and 8-game has really become Daniel’s staple game in the past few months.

Famously Chip Reese took down this title in its first year, beating Andy Bloch in a record breaking heads up session. So let’s hope we see an equally great Heads Up Duel, between – let’s say ‘ Daniel Negranu and Doyle Brunson? Let’s hope.

    Favourites to win WSOP 2010

It has become somthing of a fallacy to talk about who the favourite is to win the WSOP Main Event, since it is impossible to give any reasonable estimation given the incredibly large fields. Even though Dan Harrington did make two final tables back to back there is still a huge luck element that comes into play, even for the greatest players of all timeJohnny Chan, two time WSOP winner and one time runner up (in three successive years) has said that in order to win a WSOP event nowadays, even the smaller ones, you need to win many coinflips to stay alive – saying, essentially – that players need to gamble and win their marginal leads to have any chance of cashing big in the WSOP, and notably the WSOP Main Event.Last year when both Phil Ivey and Jeff Shulman made the final table people began to wonder if the skill versus luck factor was really proven, given the unliklihood that even Phil Ivey, considered the best in the world, could make a final table. But of course Phil Ivey does have more chance at surviving against so many other players, largely because so many players want to be able to beat him – giving him the opportunity to take down many pots that would otherwise be uneventful. He also, as Chan rightly says, has to win a many coinflips and marginal situations as any other player.
    .

Bookies lost out big time last year when Ivery made the final table simply because he was such a logical choice for people to bet on, and they did, many, many people. It was only lucky for the bookies that Ivey’s AK did not hold up against Darvin Moon’s AQ as Ivery may well have gone on to take the title, earning himself an astonishing bankroll boost but also earning many punters incredible returns on their investments.

This year will be a real clincher for many pros. If Scotty Ngyuen does not make any headway he way well quit as he said he would last year if he didn’t earn more than $4mil. He earned around $40,000 in fact but then got a sponsorship from Expekt – enough for him to continue playing.

Daniel Negranu is desperate to prove his mettle, especially after his crushing defeat against Barry Shulman in the WSOPE 2009, when Shulman stole the lead and the title when his A5 overtook Negranu’s AA. More than anyone Negranu feels like he has something to prove and you really get the sense that it means a lot to him to keep his stats on the up. Pehaps even more than the Main Event Negranu is determined to take down the Highroller 8-game event, a game which has become Daniel’s forte lately, both online and offline – and for him it is a chance to prove he is an all round poker player able to compete with the best of the best, something that he has already proven but perhaps not to the standard he is aiming for.

    Event# 57 The Main Event

That phrase – The Main Event  NL Texas Holdem- rings out in poker player’s minds like greatest final of any sport, it is the biggest poker tournament in the world by far, and the prestige attached to it is unrivalled anywhere in the world.

Event #57 the Main Event is the one tournament that outweighs every other in every possible way. The most runners, the biggest prize pool and the most big names in the game all in one place. More than any other poker tournament in the world the World Series of Poker Main Event makes players stars, rich and just by reacing the final table players are often set for sponsorship deals and a hefty bankroll.

Since Chris Moneymaker followed Robery Varykoni’s success in 2004 the world has realised it has as much chance to hit the list of poker heavyweights, so people flock to the event, from 800+ in Moneymakers day to an expected 6000 or so today. Poker has certainly come a long way but the WSOP will always remain the poker event of any poker schedule.

    WSOP Profiles: Jeff Lisandro

Last year Jeff Lisandro made history by winning three stud events within the same WSOP, winning event# 16 the seven card stud $1500, event# 44 the Razz $2500 tournament and then incredibly went on to win the the 7 stud hi/lo $10,000 event – collecting a total of $745,021 for all three wins.

It is always a test of real poker skill when a player manages to win multiple events as it takes away the luck factor, it cannot be said that Jeff Lisandro got lucky, maybe once, feasibly twice – but three time? Last year shows that Jeff Lisandro is truly one of the best stud players in the world and that is now completely undisputable.

Crazy action at The Bicycle Casino

The Bicycle Casino in California is known for its loose action and action packed tournaments. The tournaments here are not big buyin events, they are small but fast.

Understanding their customer’s penchant for fast paces games the casino created a tournament in which players start with just 800 chips and blinds go up every twenty minutes, meaning that although the game lasts for about 5 hours players that reach the final table get a great payout when it comes their way.

These events are run every weekday and their will be plenty of cash action to keep you busy if you happen to get knocked out of these small buy in poker tournaments with plenty of value.

    WSOP 2010

It is fast approaching and people want to know if this will be the year that we finally find a known player, a recognised poker legend pick up the title for the WSOP Main Event. Last year the naysayers of the poker world who lamented the main event as a crapshoot, with only unknown players ever getting as far as the final table were put in their place when both Phil Ivey and Jeff Shulman made the final table. Neither of them won, although Ivey was unlucky not to have done better when his AK got crushed by Darvin Moon’s AQ, but the point had alreayd been made.

This many people do not want to see a new star of the poker world, they want to see a former star crowned once again – Doyle Brunson’s third, Johnny Chan’s 4th? It would really do a lot to dispell the idea that tournaments, although they do of course entail getting lucky (or not getting unlucky) for a long period of time. Let’s hope that if anything we get good viewing this year and meet some familiar poekr faces at the most famous final table of any poker tournament in the world – the 2010 World Series of Poker.

    Canada Poker Online

Canadian Poker players are not restricted to where they play poker online, although there have never been any Canada-specific poker sites online, until now. Canadapoker.com is now one place Canada’s poker players can find a game aimed directly at them. Wisely Canada Poker has chisen the BOSS network to host their new site, and it has paid of in dividents.

With the upcoming iCOp series of poker tournaments online Canada Poker is able to foffer its own equivalent to SCOOP, FTOPS and ipoker’s ECOOP. And whereas with these major network or heavyweight site Series’ with iCOP there is a real chance for players making some final tables and winning huge prizepools without having to plough through thousands of players to compete.
Canada Poker is going in the right direction. Choosing a network small enough that the Canadian following can really make an impact and at the same time use software that is actually far superior to many of the bigger networks
